Approaching creature design

Why do we design creatures?

Creatures are designed for Film, Tv, gaming industry, roll playing games, collectables, etc.

The new halo games have a lot of design, possibly more than big block buster films so is a big and growing industry.

How do designers approach designs? What textures do they use and what do you recognise about them?  Can you see whats inspired their designs.

I  looked at some good and bad creature designs to help recognise what was a successful creature design.

I started by researching Jordu schell and the sculpt designs for the Avatar characters.

‘It’s not what your looking at that matters, it’s what you see.’ - Henry David Thoreau

Inspiration is right on your door step.

Animals! Mandrills- look at colour

Don’t discount colours or animals.

Unusual and visually inspiring and interesting animals:

Star nose mole.

Cuttle fish- change shape

Howler monkeys

Tasia

Take inspiration and reference and create something unusual.

Things to consider  when designing a creature.

What purpose will it serve?

(will it be used as a finished piece.)

What environment will it like in?

(Does it live in a desert, a jungle, the ocean, on a mountain, polar ice cap…?)

This usually comes from the script break down.

What does it eat?

(how does it eat, is it a predator.. this will effect its teeth and claws)

Whats it culture?

(is a space monkey or does it come from a culture)

age?

(whats it age) Is it young, middle age, old. This will effect the tecture.

Whats it social position?

(Is it king queen, etc. does it have royal tattoos etc)

The designs need to be believable that people will believe into. It needs to be recognisable for the audience so they can relate. The anatomy needs to be correct but can be tweaked and moved around.

Areas of calm are very important with areas of design.

A great design. Alien from the first Alien film.
There is a lot going on but have the area of clam at the top of the head.
