Styling the Wig
From my designs I knew to create my derider effect and texture I was going to have to curl the hair with heat. I practiced with various curling techniques on the practice dolls head using hot rods, heated rollers, hair straighteners and different sized curling wands. I found the technique which worked most effective was the smallest curling wand as it created a tight curl, which when sprayed with hair spray left to dry then brushed out created volume and tight curled ends. It was also the easiest method to style the horse hair as it was very thick and coarse so the heat settings helped as I was able to increase the temperature of the heat.
To create a rats tailed effect curl in the hair I tried using a few different products and techniques to style the hair and found that tightly twisting the hair then wrapping it around the curling wand created the twisted rat curl with a crude Im perfected effect representing my research. This process worked best when small sections of hair were used.
The curls created volume but I wanted to created even an even more wild and thick appearance within the hair to resemble the research I found into witches with the association they "perserve their power of silence..are in habit of hiding some superstitious objects in their clothes or hair" So tried out volume products

Marshall, R. (1998). Witchcraft: The history and mythology - Richard Marshall - hardcover - only from B&N books. Barnes & Noble Books.
such as Schwarzkopf got 2b power'ful volumizing styling powder which worked really well. I had purposely knotted the hair thickly and chose to incorporate horse hair into the wig to create this desired effect. The volumiszing powder helped enhance this and created an even thicker texture within the hair which when back brushed added massive’s of volume. It also helped the hair twists stay in place after had been curled along with hair spray.

The Final Wig
I added all the dread extensions which added length to the wig which worked really effectively as the longest hair I could buy for human hair was 35cm long and the longest horse hair was 50cm long, and when knotted into the wig lost length so the adding dreads worked really well and fell very naturally. All colour choices with regards to the beads and string, represent different colour meanings to portray the characteristic of a witch I found within my research. The threads and strings I selectively chose to incorporate represented the threads used within shell and knot magic spells I discovered at the Witchcraft museum. Beads and stones also represented various colour meanings such as the blue representing knowledge and power, the purple representing magic and mystery and the red representing strength and danger- All characteristics related to witches through my research. For last details I incorporated feathers into the hair to represent animal sasrifice used for spell, tools and a rural from of accessory as it was a common theme which was used through many different witch cultures.
