Colour Theory

I researched into colour theory and the representations and meanings different colours have as this will effect what colours I choose to incorporate into the hair and makeup of my character. Depending on what different colours represent will help me portray what type of character my witch is to the audience e.g good or evil.

Red: "Red is the colour of fire and blood, so it is associated with energy, war, danger, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire and love."

Orange: "Orange combines the energy or red and the happiness of yellow, it is associated with joy, sunshine and tropics."

Yellow: "Yellow is the colour of sunshine. It's associated with joy, happiness, intellect and energy."

Green:"Green is the colour of nature. It symbolises growth, harmony, freshness and fertility."

Blue: "Blue is the colour of the sky and sea. It is often associated with depth and stability. It symbolises trust loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth and heaven."

Black: "Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil and mystery."

Purple: "Purple combines the stability of blue and the energy of red. Purple is associated with royalty. It symbolises power, nobility, luxury and ambition."

White: "White is associated with light, goodness, innocence and purity. It symbolises safety, purity and cleanliness heraldry, white depicts faith and purity."

Red:

Is associated with danger, power, determination, passion and desire. These are some of the characteristics through my research of witches found they are associated with.

Red is also the colour of blood and fire which relates to two common aspects related to witch craft: sacrifice and toucher.

Witches would use animals and humans within there spells and curses and witches were commonly burnt as a punishment for witchcraft.

Wisdom and confidence are two characteristics associated with the colour blue which relates to my witchcraft research. Through different descriptions the witch is described as wise.

It is interesting how the different shades of blue represents different things. Dark blue is more appropriate than light blue to represent the witch images as it is associated with knowledge and power.

Researching into colour I found that the associations with the colour purple related to my witchcraft research greatly. Power, extravagance, wisdom, independence, mystery and magic were the associations most relevant with mystery and magic being the two main things associated to witchcraft and witches.

Like dark blue, dark purple's representations are most relevant for the character of a witch.

Aspects from research into witches suggested that they could be innocent and pure when they were falsely accused.

Although these traits were only lightly mentioned as white is colour represented with good and innocence when creating my character adding small amounts of the colour white to suggests these good traits will be considered.

Black will be a key colour I will incorporate into the designs for my witch character as its the colour which most relates to my witchcraft research. Power, elegance, formality, death, evil and mystery these associations represent witchcraft wether they are true characteristics proven through historical research and facts or actions and events which associate these traits to witches.

"Black is a mysterious colour associated with fear and the unknown." One of the reasons witches were feared was because of the unknown, not understanding them and what they were capable of made them something to be feared.

I researched further into colour meaning and the symbols of colour in different contexts to ensure the colours I use represent the correct feeling or meaning for the context I am using it in.
